Day 3 of my countdown to Christmas and the biggest tip that I can give you to get through the festive season unscathed is to PLAN, PLAN, PLAN.

December can be a non stop month of entertaining and socialising. Office parties, dinner parties, nights out with friends and that’s before you have even made it too Christmas week.

It’s easy then to just think ‘I’ll start the diet in the New Year’. The thing with diets is that there will always be an excuse to postpone them so lets not use that approach this year.

I promise you that you will feel better for it.

So, have a PLAN. Know when you will be out, if it involves eating, if so what sort of food. Is it an event that you can take something to – most hosts and hostesses would be more than happy for you to take a dish with you that you can share.

If you are going for a meal in a restaurant then have either a starter or a dessert and not both. Eat a lighter lunch that day and maybe do some extra exercise to even things out.

Planning means you can keep control but still enjoy yourself. At the end of the day none of the fun of Christmas is really about the food you are eating but about the people you are with. The friends and family that you are spending precious time with.

Have fun planning out your Christmas entertainment and see you tomorrow.

23 days until Christmas Eve which means I have 23 opportunities to help you make this Christmas as healthy as possible whilst still enjoying all that the festivities has to offer.

So, today I am going to give you this tip.

Don’t think that just because we are in December now that all is lost and you may as well start the new diet and exercise plan in January.

Christmas is only really 3 days if you think about it – Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day – and only 2 days if you don’t live in the UK as nowhere else celebrates Boxing Day!!

So, why not eat as healthily as you can up until Christmas Eve and then indulge a little on the day itself and then continue the good work you started straight after.

Wouldn’t it be a nicer feeling this year to get to New Year without feeling full up, bloated and washed out???

Have a think about it and I’ll see you tomorrow……

Today is the first of December and so I am finally happy to start thinking and talking about Christmas.

We have started singing Christmas carols, the decorations will go up this weekend and I will be making the first of what I’m sure will be many batches of raw vegan mince pies …… yummmmmmmy

Despite December being the month of parties, food and festive cheer it is also the month of stress. Stress to make it all perfect, find the right gifts for everyone, make sure there is plenty of food and treats around and basically be the best and most perfect Christmas fairy ensuring everyone has the most amazing Christmas ever – until next year that is.

It can be exhausting and it’s no wonder that most of us arrive at New Year’s eve tired, washed out and with little or no inclination to do anything other than slob out in front of the TV; with the last chimes of the clock echoing as you wearily climb the stairs to bed.

So, how do you do it differently, how do you enjoy Christmas without resorting to eating your own body weight in food over a few days and vowing in the New Year to never do it again!! Is it possible and can it be done without feeling like the Christmas grinch??

Of course the answer is yes. Christmas doesn’t have to be the season of over doing it and then regretting it the minute its over.

There are ways to still enjoy the ‘jolly season’ it just takes a little planning. Luckily we have 24 more days in which to plan and I’m going to share with you over the next 24 days healthy and yet delicious recipes and tips that will have you enjoying your Christmas  without the dreaded feeling that you have overdone it come New Year………..

I am on day 9 of a 15 day orange juice and water fast.

Fasting of any description is an amazing healing tool to have especially if you are interested in long term health and recovering from years of disordered eating.

Whilst the actual process of fasting can be difficult there are certainly more than enough physical and emotional benefits to out weigh the initial discomfort or fear surrounding fasting.

Some of these many benefits are as follows:-

Antiaging effects
Better attitude
Better resistance to disease
Better sleep
Clearer skin
Increased creativity
Detoxification
Improved senses (vision, hearing, taste)
More clarity (mentally and emotionally)
More energy
Better ability to relax
Preponderance of new ideas
Purification of body and mind
Reduction of allergies
Rejuvenation of body
Rest for digestive organs
Revitalization
Spiritual awareness
Weight loss

The list could go on and on as there are so many positive benefits to giving the digestive system a rest and allowing all that extra energy to go to work elsewhere in the body and heal where needs be.

For me I had several reasons for wanting to do a fast.

Physically I wanted to:-

  • Heal some painful rheumatoid arthritis that I have in the forefinger and thumb of one hand –
  • Lose some slight stomach fat –
  • Allow my body a period of detoxification –

Emotionally I wanted to:-

  • Reduce the attachments I have to food –
  • Allow any emotions associated with food cravings come to the surface to be healed –

As you can see all of my objectives that I set out to achieve on this fast have been met. However, I have experienced some other benefits as well.

  • Increased energy – it has been crazy through the roof.
  • Amazing levels of clarity – I have overhauled both my websites in a week and have great renewed vision for where I am taking them.
  • Rocking amount of new ideas for projects in the months ahead.
  • Beautiful sense of calmness and joy – even though I am doing this fast whilst my husband is away and I am missing him I have a real underlying sense of calm and happiness.

Fasting has been such a great experience for me and the benefits have been truly out of this world. It is not an easy process to go through and I have had some rough days but I have found a compromise between the water and a small amount of orange juice that works for me and makes it easier.

You can see how I am getting on with the fast by following my vlogs on my YouTube channel.

Please note that if you have never fasted before then you should always consult your doctor or health practitioner for advice before commencing.

Pretty much all of us have been there at some stage or another. Consoling ourselves over the break up of a relationship, a bad day at work, the kids playing up, the weather being grey and wet. Almost all and every excuse we can think of to have another slice of cake, eat the rest of that box of chocolates, or for those with a more savoury tooth devour those tortilla chips smothered in sour cream and cheese.

When our emotions dip we try to pick them up again with food. Equally when our emotions are high we turn to food to help us celebrate our good fortune or special occasion. It seems that every way we turn in our lives food is there as our crutch or our reward.

Turning away from cakes, chocolates and tortilla chips and looking for healthier versions instead means you can no longer enjoy your food – or so it would seem. You are labeled ‘boring’ or a ‘health freak’ maybe you even have an eating disorder for wanting to only eat food that is good for you. And you couldn’t possibly enjoy that food because you are denying yourself of all those goodies that you used to associate with having a good time.

This is where the problem lies. We are taught/conditioned from an early age to expect our food to make us feel good at an emotional level. But food is just fuel for the body; nothing more and nothing less. True happiness lies within, it is not something that can be ‘found’ in food. You can have a good time eating food but it is not the food that is giving you the good time rather your perception or the situation you are in.

To explain further lets take two situations:-

1. You are with a group of people celebrating a special occasion maybe in a fancy restaurant or outside in the sun. Now is it the food that is giving you a good time or the fact that you are with loved ones, in a relaxing and uplifting environment. Is it the food that is causing you to enjoy yourself or the fact that you are engaging with fellow human beings, talking and laughing and doing the things that as social/pack creatures we like to do best?

2. You have had a bad day at work and come home seeking solace in a bowl of ice cream. You have been thinking about it all afternoon and playing it over and over in your mind. Is it the ice cream that will make you feel better or your perception of that ice cream. For someone else it may be chocolate cake or chips and mayonnaise or for me it would be a bowl of fresh mango. It’s not the food it’s your perception of what that food will do.

Being able to make the distinction is half the battle to being able to realise that food is just fuel. It has no special powers to make us feel better because it is just food.

I have done my fair share of emotional eating over the years, and most of the time it has just left me feeling full up, bloated and still as fed up as I was before I started. Likewise I have gone out for meals and thought that just because I am out I must eat three courses to make the most of the situation. Then I have spent the rest of evening feeling uncomfortably stuffed and trussed up in my glad rags wishing I could just get home and undo my trouser buttons to get some relief!

Nowadays I don’t place any emotional emphasis on my diet. I eat simple foods and don’t deviate when I go out. I still occasionally eat chocolate – vegan or raw but that is becoming less and less because I honestly don’t want it anymore.

However, just because I no longer eat from an emotional standpoint does not mean that I no longer enjoy my food. To the contrary, I actually think I enjoy my food much more than I ever did. Because now my food nourishes me. I can feel it doing me good, making me stronger. I feel better than I have in years, I look good (at least I think so!) and most importantly my food tastes so good as well. Eating a juicy, sweet and ripe nectarine tastes so much better to my taste buds now than scoffing down a box of chocolates or a packet of biscuits.

So it is possible to let go of the emotion and keep the enjoyment, in fact it becomes easier to enjoy and I believe that eating a diet rich in healthy, simple foods that we were designed to eat helps to keep our emotions on an even keel anyway so no more need to ‘cheer’ ourselves up or ‘reward’ ourselves for doing good. Its a win-win situation.

A report out in the Daily Mail today reveals that the ‘mysterious men in white coats’ who are presumably behind all these surveys are now placing the rise in some women’s cancers on their lifestyle. Am sure this applies to the rise in men’s cancers too and if not some cancers then why not all?

Which leads me to the question – what does your lifestyle do to help you prevent cancer?

It follows suit doesn’t it that if what we are doing in our day to day lives can increase our risk of cancer then what we do can equally prevent it as well.

I’m not sure that everybody gets this concept though. I think there is still a huge belief that cancer is just something that happens to us; that we are unlucky if it strikes us.

I don’t think that we actually spend too much time thinking about the things that we might be inviting into our lives that could aid our fall into cancer.

We all have cancer cells inside us – actually let me rephrase that a little. All the cells in our body are capable – under the right circumstances – to start multiplying out of control thus becoming cancer cells.

We influence those circumstances by the foods we eat, the exercise we take, the amount of stress in our live’s and how we deal with it, the quality of our sleep, the way we subject our bodies to different chemicals (i.e. skin care products, household products, make up etc etc), the amount of alcohol we drink, whether we smoke ……. and the list goes on.

Lets just take the first from the list – food. So much of our food today is tampered with. Denatured, processed, refined, added to with chemicals, preservatives and flavourings all of which we have no idea of the origin of.

Why would you eat something when half the ingredients that make up that product you can’t even pronounce let alone identify.

Where does that food come from, what is in it, what do those ingredients do for us, offer us in terms of nutrition. If you don’t know the answers then why are you eating it?

Hippocrates who was considered the ‘father of western medicine’ said ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’. He understood the importance that food has on our bodies and it is an importance that has been lost in recent years.

Now we get consumed by food, emotionally attached and addicted to it. We place too much importance on it, expecting it to entertain us and comfort us. This is not what food is for.

Food is fuel for our body and it gives us the means with which to tackle everything else in our life with strength and vitality.

We need to take back some control and simplify our lifestyles so that we can reduce the risks we are allowing modern living to place on us.

Of course cancer has been around for thousands of years but it has never been around in the numbers that it is today. There is always a risk that we may develop a serious life threatening disease but it would seem that we are playing Russian Roulette with that risk.

Think about what you are doing in your life that could potentially be increasing your chances of developing cancer and then do something about it. Before it is too late.

An article out in the Daily Mail today (see here for full transcript) states that HALF of all Alzheimer’s cases are caused by poor lifestyle. For poor lifestyle read; bad diet, lack of exercise, smoking, drinking……I’m sure you get the picture.

Personally I think that the figure of 50% is very conservative and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it was a lot, lot higher than this.

Dementia, of which Alzheimer’s is just one form, is an evil disease. It robs the victim of their life and it takes the loved one away from the people around them. Imagine not being able to remember all the great memories of your life, or worse still the family and friends you have made those memories with. What a sad and lonely way to end what was surely an incredible life.

Knowing that it is a preventable disease, that by just doing some daily exercise and eating in a healthy way we can reduce our risk of it developing is just another tick for me in the box that says healthy living is the way to go.

So many of our so called ‘lifestyle’ diseases i.e. diabetes, heart disease, strokes, cancers can be reduced and eradicated but moving our butts and stop filling our stomachs as if they were garbage bins.

It is down to us as individuals to take control of our own health. We chose by our food choices and by our attitude to exercise whether we get to play ‘russian roulette’ with our health later down the line.

Good health is not something that is given to the lucky few, it is something that has to be worked on; consistently and for good. Taking responsibility for the incredible body you have been given is something that can be daunting for sure and yet once achieved can be the most amazing thing ever.
